Nearly five decades ago, a popular Tamil weekly published a serial called THUPPARIYUM SAMBU (Sleuthing Sambu) written by Devan, a humorist comparable to P.G.Wodehouse in creating immortal comic characters. This was an instant success because the hero, Sambu was a uniquely entertaining "sleuth" who established rapport with the entire Tamil reading public with his "exploits" which unearthed many peculiar crimes which were "solved" mostly by accident when Sambu stumbled on the clues.
Sambu receives a briefing from an advocate to visit Bangalore on a special assignment. There is a wedding in a Zamindar's family. Among the guests will be a Maharani from Andhra who will be wearing a priceless pearl necklace which is her heirloom of fourteen generations. Sambu is given the task of ensuring the security of this precious jewel during the Maharani's sojourn in Bangalore. How the jewel is lost form the Maharani's possession and how Sambu retrieves it with stars in his favour forms the rest of the narrative
